Sealants are materials that prevent fluids and other particles from passing through surfaces and joints. They also block air leakage, insects, dust, sound, heat, and other substances.

Sealants are primarily used to close surface openings, where alternate materials like mortar or concrete can’t be used. They serve three essential functions:

  • Fill the gap between two or more components
  • Provide a protective barrier against substances
  • Maintain their sealing effectiveness through their expected lifetime

To fulfill these functions efficiently, the sealants must be suitably matched with the application requirement. While applications vary greatly, there are only two types of joints in terms of functionality: working joints and nonworking joints.

The degree of movement is the primary distinction between these joints. While some special applications may necessitate special sealant properties, the amount of joint movement must be the first consideration in selecting a sealant for any joint.

ECMAS provides three types of a sealant (ECMASEAL) based on their composition and usage. They are:

    Polysulphide sealants (ECMASEAL PS)

Polysulphides were the first type of elastomeric joint sealants to be used in construction and are the most commonly used products for reinforced concrete structures like roads, buildings, bridges, reservoirs & sea walls, and also in floor joints that require a high damage resistance for heavy traffic.

These provide an even, water-tight, highly resilient seal with great thermal flexibility & recovery properties. They provide excellent cohesion to most substrates, prevent cracking by accommodating for expansion/contraction during atmospheric changes & have good tear, chemical & fuel resistance.

    Polyurethane Sealants (ECMASEAL PU)

Polyurethane is among the most adaptive polymers used in sealants for construction projects. Polyurethane sealants can be applied to concrete road & car park floors, vertical & horizontal expansion joints,  masonry expansion units, and concrete control joints.

They are ready-to-use sealants and provide excellent concrete adhesion, good elongation at breaks, lesser VOCs, great resistance to adverse weather, and faster curing than other products.

    MS Polymer Sealants (ECMASEAL MS)

Modified silicone polymer sealants, also known as hybrid sealants, are highly durable & elastomeric structural sealants with a modified silane base. They are ideally used in low movement joints, expansion joints, exterior claddings and other joints.

They provide excellent adhesive strength for a wide range of substrates, are easy to use, and are highly resistant to chemicals.
